Statistics

The City of Helsinki Tourist & Convention Bureau publishes a monthly statistical report on Helsinki tourism.

The report includes the latest statistical information published by Statistics Finland, the Finnish Maritime Administration and Finavia. Accommodation statistics have a two-month delay due to technical reasons.

An annual report on Helsinki tourism is published in April. A ten-year overview is also available for the years 1990-2000.

Strong rise in domestic travel in May

Overnight stays by domestic leisure travellers in May increased clearly from the previous year. On the other hand, business travel from both Finland and abroad reduced. Domestic travel has been boosted by a general rise in its popularity in Finland, the after-effects of last April's volcanic ash problems as well as by the numerous events and concerts that took place in Helsinki during early summer. Overnight stays by foreign visitors reduced
by 5.3% in May, however. The amount of visits made by residents of our neighbouring countries in particular as well as from the USA and Japan have grown. Generally speaking, the early part of the year has been a period of strong growth. The year's target (4% growth) is being exceeded by a substantial margin (+8.4% growth).

Helsinki's accommodation capacity reduces

Helsinki's accommodation capacity has reduced somewhat over the spring. A few mid-range accommodation providers exited the market last year, while a new hotel, Cumulus Hakaniemi, commenced
operations during the same period. The room utilisation
rate has risen a little and it stood at 69.3% in May. Market indicators still lag behind the levels that were attained before the onset of the economic downturn, however. The duration of traveller stays does not appear to be changing substantially. On average, overseas guests stay in Helsinki for longer than domestic travellers do.
