Christmas markets
With the search for the ideal Christmas presents beginning already in late autumn these days, the nation’s blood pressure begins to rise and consumers break out in a cold sweat. Wise shoppers stress as little as possible by filling up their sleighs with unique gifts from Helsinki’s Christmas markets!
Christmas fairs with their handicrafts and designer stalls are an endless wellspring of unique gift ideas. The biggest annual Christmas market in Helsinki is held at Vanha Ylioppilastalo – the Old Student House. The St. Thomas Christmas Market is traditionally held along Esplanade Park, while Ornamo’s Design Christmas Market is held at the Design Forum.
Sales after Christmas
Having made the most of their holidays, Finns heave their pork-filled tummies back to the shops in search of great sales. Practically all the clothing shops in Helsinki, from the biggest department stores to the tiniest boutiques, offer their best items at discount prices. If you snooze you lose, so it pays to be snappy right after Boxing Day – many items disappear from the hangers already on the first day. But don’t worry too much – there are plenty of good deals to be found even after the New Year!
