Sauna and ice swimming in Helsinki

Hot saunas relax both the mind and the body. After throwing water on the rocks and soaking up the heat, cool off with a refreshing swim.

You can even swim through a hole cut in the ice in wintertime. You can pamper yourself even more at a spa, where your sauna can include a swim, a whirlpool, a massage and spa treatments. An authentic Finnish sauna has to be experienced by all visitors.

Nearly all hotels in Helsinki have their own saunas, in addition to which visitors can enjoy public saunas.

Swimming in a hole that has been cut in the ice, or “avantouinti”, is an extreme sport practised by the heartiest of Finns. Ice swimming relaxes and refreshes the body, while improving stress tolerance levels. Believers also claim that it keeps away the flu and enhances blood circulation. In Helsinki metropolitan area you can try ice swimming at Kuusijärvi Recreation Centre Vantaa (Kuusijärventie 3, 01260 Vantaa).
