Helsinki Zoo, known as "Korkeasaari" among finns, is one of the oldest zoos in the world (founded in 1889). In Helsinki Zoo you'll meet animals from the arctic tundra to the tropical rainforest. Approximately 200 different animal species reside in the Zoo, and there are almost a 1000 different plant species. Protecting endangered species is a heartfelt matter for the zoo. The zoos in Europe form a network which works to preserve a number of species. Zoos are often the last refuge for many endangered species. The rhino sign will take you to the animals that belong to the zoos' shared protection programme.

Open:
2010: May-August Mon-Sun 10-20, October-March Mon-Sun 10-16, September and April Mon-Sun 10-18. Closed only on Christmas Eve and on Midsummer Eve in the evening.

Price:
2010: Adults via Mustikkamaa bridge 10€, waterbus 16€. Children (6-17 yrs) via Mustikkamaa bridge 5€, waterbus 8€. Waterbuses from the Market Square and from Hakaniemi Market in summer.

Location:
Waterbus connection from Market Square from May-September, from Hakaniemi May-August. Bridge connection year round. Zoobus nr.11 from the Railwaystation to Korkeasaari zoo all year round.

Other services:
Safari Café (~60seats) in Mustikkamaa pavilion and the Pukki Restaurant on the island (~100seats, ~80 seats on the outdoor terrace in summer, tel.+358-(0)9-6962 3729), are both open all year round. Café Karhu (Bear), tel.+358-(0)9-6962 3750, Saarenvartijan tuvan kahvila (~20seats, ~28 seats on the outdoor terrace) and kiosks are open in summer. Also outdoor tables for guests to use. Souvenir shops.

Disabled persons:
Access with wheelchairs, assistant needed, Inva-WC. Tours by car possible on Thursdays 9-10.
