“In Helsinki everything is fun, even in wintertime!”

PRESS RELEASE 3.2.2015

Local residents and fans of Helsinki recommend outdoor excursions, winter picnics and cultural entertainment.

As part of the Winter Fun Helsinki campaign, Visit Helsinki has invited local residents, tourists and others fans of Helsinki to suggest tips on how to spend a great winter’s day in Helsinki. Between the 15th and 31st of January 2015, the Winter Fun Helsinki campaign website received an incredible amount of feedback, with almost 1400 tips being submitted.

For many people, the funniest way to spend a winter’s day in the city is to go sledding in one of the many parks, particularly the hilly Sinebrychoff and Kaivopuisto parks. Favourite destinations in the city include the islands of Suomenlinna, Uunisaari, Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo) and Seurasaari, as well as the large outdoor recreational areas of Paloheinä and Keskuspuisto (Central Park). Other popular winter activities include skating on the many ice skating rinks in the city centre, as well as ice swimming and saunas in the city’s recreational areas.

Snacks play an important role in enjoying the outdoors in wintertime. Many people recommend warm cocoa – either bringing it with in a thermos bottle or enjoying it while warming up in a café. Some people also enjoy complete winter picnics – at least it’s easy to keep the sparkling wine cool!

A considerable portion of the tips submitted in January suggested winter days indoors enjoying culture. Museums are always popular, but concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre and performances at the Finnish National Opera and theatres were also mentioned a lot. Likewise, Helsinki is a great place for enjoying food culture, and many suggested making the most of winter by acquainting oneself with the city’s many fine cafés and restaurants.

Enjoying wintertime in Helsinki with the kids is also easy, not only by taking them sledding and letting them enjoy the outdoors, but also by visiting such popular attractions as SEA LIFE Helsinki, Heureka – The Finnish Science Centre, the Natural History Museum, spas and other indoor activity centres.

Visit Helsinki will make the most of all the tips that have been submitted by using them in our tourism marketing activities.

The recommendations of Helsinki’s residents and fans are very important for our work and for the visitors whom we serve. We plan to publish the tips on our website and think up ways in which we can make the most of them in our domestic and international marketing campaigns, especially for the next winter season. For example, a winter picnic is a great idea!” comments Maarit Pitkänen, Marketing Communications Director at Visit Helsinki.

Tips can still be submitted on the Visithelsinki.fi website until 8 February 2015, the last day of the Winter Fun Helsinki campaign. Everyone who submits a tip will automatically be included in a prize drawing for the chance to win a Helsinki experience for two.

Further information about special offers during the Winter Fun Helsinki campaign, as well as our competition, is available on the campaign website winterfun.visithelsinki.fi.
