Magnificent Turku – The old and new of the maritime city

As Finland’s oldest city, Turku offers up a multitude of experiences – but what is there that’s new?

In recent years Turku has witnessed the remarkable rise of the local restaurant culture, drawing high praise and leading to Turku being regarded as the culinary capital of Finland. Turku takes particular advantage of its beautiful archipelago surroundings, incorporating the delicious fish and new potatoes, which form the region’s traditional staple. What’s more, the restaurants of Turku are typically informal, cozy bistros, where you are sure to get great value for money.

Did you know that Turku has been the location for the construction of some of the world’s largest and most exclusive luxury cruise liners? It is now possible to understand and explore the manufacturing of these vessels on the MEYER TURKU TOUR. The tour begins at Forum Marinum on the shores of the River Aura, where the visitors become acquainted with the surrounding environment, the buildings, repair dock and cranes. Afterwards the tour moves inside Forum Marinum, where attention is given to the exhibitions and scale models as well as the range of photo displays showing the past and present of Turku’s shipbuilding. From there the tour continues to the shipyard.

The shores of the River Aura are already being prepared for the arrival in the city of the ‘tall ships’ in 2017. The Tall Ships’ Races once again come to Turku from 13th-16th July 2017. The colossal city event will draw hundreds of thousands of visitors seeking to enjoy the magnificence and beauty of the ships, as well as the bountiful programme of events.
