Club culture in Helsinki
Helsinki’s club scene has enjoyed a real renaissance over the past five or so years. During this time the focal point of urban events has shifted from the city centre to the colourful district of Kallio and onwards to Vallila, Suvilahti and Kalasatama.
The heart of the nightlife in Kallio is the area along the main avenue Hämeentie that encompasses Kuudes Linja, Kaiku and Siltanen. Important – if somewhat sporadic – locations include Ääniwalli, the industrial area in Vallila, and the wide range of unofficial club venues throughout Helsinki’s peninsula. In summertime electronic music plays a major role at the Flow Festival, which is practically an institution these days, and at numerous smaller festivals.
The people behind Helsinki’s flourishing club culture include its DJs, promoters and dancers, not forgetting the wide variety of night people. Many local DJs and musicians have also established international reputations. The biggest names right now include Lil' Tony, Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Trevor Deep Jr and K-X-P.
